The Coalition for the Capital Crescent Trail (CCCT) is a nonprofit volunteer citizens’ group with a mission of promoting a first class development of the 11.2 mile Rail Trail from Georgetown, D.C. to Silver Spring, MD, for multi-purpose, recreational use.
The bylaws of the Coalition for the Capital Crescent Trail (CCCT) call for a Board of Directors of between 3 and 15 members elected at each annual meeting of the membership. The Board of Directors may fill vacancies on the Board between annual meetings. The Board has established a Governance Committee to recruit and recommend Board members with a goal of having a Board that reflects the various interests and diversity of the membership and of users of the Capital Crescent Trail and the skills needed to be an effective advocate for trail users.
In seeking a broad range of interests and expertise for the Board as a whole, members of the Governance Committee in reviewing candidates will consider the following criteria:
- Commitment to the mission (see first paragraph above) of the Coalition for the Capital Crescent Trail organization;
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others on a board of volunteer directors;
- Representation of the diverse interests of trail users (eg., bikers, walkers, commuters);
- Representation of the geographic diversity of the trail (eg., Silver Spring, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Washington, DC);
- Representation of the region’s rich ethnic and racial diversity;
- Expertise in environmental planning, trail management, transportation alternatives, and other topics relevant to the future of the Capital Crescent Trail;
- Experience interacting with local, state, and/or federal governments;
- History of involvement in community activities;
- Knowledge of best practices of successful nonprofit community organizations;
- Experience with fundraising for community causes;
- Demonstrated ability to get stuff done.

For completeness, here is the stated purpose of the CCCT from the Articles of Incorporation:
The purposes for which the Corporation is formed are:
- To promote preservation of land for use as parks and trails in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and its environs, focusing on (but not limited to) preservation of the Georgetown Subdivision Rail Line (the "Georgetown Spur" that runs from Silver Spring in Maryland through Bethesda to Georgetown in Northwest Washington, D.C.) for use as a linear park and recreational facility, including a trail system, hereafter referred to as the Capital Crescent Trail;
- To work with Washington area environmental groups, recreational groups, civic associations, government agencies, companies, and individuals to educate the public about opportunities for parks, trails, and similar recreational facilities in the Washington area; and
- To perform such other activities as are permitted corporations under the General Laws of the State of Maryland, to the extent such charitable and educational activities are permitted for organizations which are exempt from Federal income tax under section 50l(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (or the corresponding provisions of any future United States Internal Revenue Law).
